We have SO MANY GIANT ripe vegetables, so please stop by and get some produce!!

Seedlings!!

Our seedlings are getting out of control! Not even 2 weeks since planting and they're huge! And we need them to stay out of the ground for another 2 weeks..
Any suggestions?
Guess it's better than no seedlings at all?
Hope our 4th graders are having the same success!

Greenhouse top off after they touch the top, and ideally next to an open window or fan to get them used to wind.
Can't wait to see your seed progress!
Happy sprouting!

The First 2014 BODY Spring Events

So! The BODY Community Garden had a big week last week!

On Thursday we planted seeds with our favorite 4th graders at PS89 and told them all about their upcoming field trips to the garden!  The seeds will grow into the seedlings the students will plant during their visit.  Each student got to plant at least one seedling, and also learned about macronutrients from BODY's awesome Nutrition Group.

We also planted our own seedling tray to make sure we have enough seeds sprout into seedlings for the students to plant during their field trips.  It has only been a week and we already have a TON of progress on our seed growth!  We hope the 4th graders are taking good care of their seedlings and are seeing the same results :)

Already growing big and strong!

Also, last week we were so lucky to work with some wonderful 9th graders from Pelham Lab High School during their Community Action Day.  The students helped us plant 4 trees (!! that is a lot of work), plant sunflower, corn and carrot seeds, and clean up the garden.  We were so impressed with how helpful, hard working and smart these students were and would be ecstatic to have them come back any day!

New fig tree planted!

Thank you so much to the students and teachers of Pelham Lab who helped us on Friday!  We were so happy with all of the work we accomplished!

We have our first Community Work Day coming up on April 27th, from 12-4pm in the garden to celebrate Earth Week!

We hope you can join us for some sun, fresh air, and garden productivity. We are going to make some repairs to our trellis, lettuce table and strawberry planters, and also plan to make some new additions to the garden.
We hope to see you all then!

Happy Spring!

Welcome back Spring!

Hi everyone!

We're back for our 2014 planting season!! This is the BODY Community Garden's 3rd planting season, and we're excited for new plants, new community involvement and new projects!

We have already had a great start to our season by getting 4 free trees from the Million Tree NYC program (http://www.milliontreesnyc.org/html/home/home.shtml).

Also, spring has officially sprung in the BODY garden and we're seeing a bunch of beautiful flowers starting from bulbs we planted in the fall of last year.  We will have more flowers to plant in May, but until then, these make a great start to the garden!

We are getting the spring started this year with a trip to visit our favorite 4th graders at PS89 to have them start seeds which will become seedlings they will plant during their field trips to the garden in early May.

Also, we will have some of the students from Pelham Lab High School visiting the garden for their Community Action Day!  They are going to help with some of our early spring construction projects to get ready for our planting season.

Finally - we have a new way you can follow the progress of the garden!  Follow us on Instagram - @BODYCommunityGarden
Pretty pictures of flowers?  Why not?

Don't forget - if you have any questions about the garden, our events, or how you can get involved, feel free to email us at BODYCommunityGarden@gmail.com.

Anyway, get ready for some exciting spring happenings at the garden!  We hope to see many of you at the Open Hours this spring and summer.

Happy Spring!

Bees!

I love this TED talk about how bees (and their ability to survive in colonies and pollinate our crops) are so important for human lives and lifestyles!

If you have a space and the means, plant flowers!  And avoid using pesticides!  Help our local bee communities survive!

We are always overjoyed when we see bees in our garden.

Hope you enjoy.
